CHRIS WALKER VS. KORNSTEP

While I’m writing about dubstep, I just read on Stereogum that Korn — my least favorite poop-rock band of all time and the only band whose albums I’ve removed from my collection and destroyed — is putting out a dubstep album.
Lucky us.
According to Stereogum, the album features production from woobly-noise makers like 12th Planet and Excision — artists I actually kind of like — and will be called The Path Of Totality. Evidently, The Path Of Totality has something to do with seeing the sun in a who cares, why didn’t Korn take the time and money they spent creating this collection of certain shit-bombs and instead use those resources to find a way to fly themselves into the sun?
A few months ago, when I heard the Korn and Skrillex collaboration, “Get Up!”, I understood how and why it happened. Sonny Moore — or Skrillex, prominent dubstep artist — used to be in a screamo band around the time people stopped caring about the Warped Tour; Korn was undoubtedly an influence on Moore’s early days. Due to Moore’s current popularity and Korn’s irrelevancy, Korn probably reached out and Moore, being a fan, said yes. Fair enough. But now the world needs an entire album’s worth of Jon Davis whining about the same shit he’s been whining about since 1994 over Transformer sounds? Water-boarding sounds more delightful.
Maybe I’m being too negative. After all, what if The Path of Poor Taste ends up being the final nail in the coffin of the oft-dubbed “brostep” nonsense and causes things to go back to normal? What if this is dubstep’s “jump the shark”, so to speak, and makes dubstreamers or whatevers abandon ship and find a new genre / subculture to suck the enjoyment out of? Whatever the outcome, I can’t wait to illegally download The Path Of Totality (because who would pay for this?), burn it onto a disc, and use that disc as a drink coaster.
